Thank Your Mentor
Phi Kappa Psi encourages all members to participate in National Mentoring Month and "Thank Your Mentor Day"*
For those not aware, mentoring has become a top priority of Phi Kappa Psi today. With more and more young men entering their fraternal experience coming from a background that does not include a strong male influence, the ability of the Fraternity's population to provide support is essential. We urge our alumni to considering getting involved with the mentoring of a young student. We urge our chapters to work hard to implement a mentoring program.
In the case of those who are actively pursuing current mentoring programs and relationships, this is a month to celebrate that work. As a highlight of National Mentoring Month 2012, Thank Your Mentor Day™ will be celebrated on Thursday, January 26th. On that day, many Americans will reach out to thank or honor those individuals who encouraged and guided them, and had a lasting, positive impact on their lives.
The day promotes four ways to go about thanking your mentor, and they are listed below with some Phi Psi specific ways of executing them:
- Contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation - You can download a 'Thank You" card from the Campaign Marketing Materials page
- Pass on what you received by becoming a mentor to a young person in your community - Information about Phi Kappa Psi mentoring programs is available on the Phi Kappa Psi website and through Phi Psi Connect in the Chapter Officer Resources container
- Make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program - You can contact the National HQ to learn if there are any Phi Kappa Psi mentoring programs in your area.
- Write a tribute to your mentor - These tributes may be posted on the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity Facebook group and the "Who Mentored You?" website
Mentoring reinforces the conviction that Phi Kappa Psi's brotherhood and ideals continue to impact men throughout their lives. As the first paragraph of The Phi Kappa Psi Creed reads: “I believe that Phi Kappa Psi is a brotherhood of honorable men, courteous and cultured, who pledge throughout their lives to be generous, compassionate and loyal comrades…” Please take this occasion to recognize the mentors who have made a difference in your life.
*Thank Your Mentor Day is an initiative of the Harvard School of Public Health
