Phi Psi Mourns Passing of Terry Harper

Terrence G. "Terry" Harper, Executive Director of Phi Kappa Psi 1990-1999, passed away the morning of Tuesday, June 3, 2009 due to ongoing complications with recurrent brain cancer. The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity has called for an official period of mourning to be observed by members for one month, from June 3, 2009 to July 3, 2009. The traditional emblem of Fraternal mourning is a strip of black crepe or silk draped diagonally from left to right across the Fraternity badge. Chapter charters may be draped in black, and the Fraternity banner should be flown at half-staff until Friday, 3 July 2009, in remembrance of Brother Harper.

The Phi Kappa Psi Foundation has established a fund in memory of Terry. To donate, please contact the Foundation at 1-800-350-1852. Checks may be sent to the Foundation with "Terry Harper Fund" in the memo line. More information about this fund will be forthcoming.

During Terry's 13 years on the Fraternity staff, he helped create programs such as the Presidents Leadership Academy and The Leadership Experience, and was a key leader as Phi Psi and its Foundation grew financially. Since leaving staff, he has continued to serve Phi Kappa Psi as a Permanent Fund Trustee, Treasurer of the Indianapolis Alumni Association, and most recently as Symposiarch of the 74th Grand Arch Council's closing banquet in 2008.

Terry is survived by his wife Lee Ann, sons Dale and Jace, and countless friends, family and well-wishers.

Terry and Lee Ann bravely kept up a blog through his struggles with cancer. Whether one had the privilege of knowing Terry personally or not, his personality and love of life shine through in his writings, which can be found at http://melonthump.blogspot.com/.

Brothers wishing to pay final respects to Terry may attend his remembrance on Saturday, June 6, 2009 or a party held in his honor Sunday, June 7, 2009. Information about each event can be found on the Harpers' blog mentioned above.
