More than 800,000 people die by suicide each year—that’s one person every 40 seconds. Odds are you know someone who has attempted to commit suicide. We know Phi Kappa Psi members experience significant issues with mental health, and that’s why we are proud to be an active participant in National Suicide Prevention Week, highlighting this important issue and providing education on how we all play a role in suicide prevention. You can find a toolkit with ideas for how your chapter can be involved and active in this important conversation here. Please download this PDF to access the linked resources.
Phi Kappa Psi has partnered with Take 5 to Saves Lives to bring light to this meaningful topic. The Take 5 to Save Lives campaign asks each Phi Psi to take time out of their day the week of September 9-15, 2018 to complete five action items:
- Learn the Signs
- Do Your Part
- Practice Self-Care
- Reach Out
- Spread the Word
Saturday, September 10, 2018 is World Suicide Prevention Day, and you can make a difference. By taking five minutes to get involved and become informed, you will be part of a worldwide movement to save lives.
A Chapter Toolkit is available to provide resources and ideas to chapters on how to educate themselves, raise awareness, and open up on conversation on mental health. Please fill out this form if you plan to host an event or educational program.
There are plenty of other ways to be an advocate for suicide prevention. They include:
- Share on-campus resources with your chapter brothers and fellow students
- Share trainings and/or educational programs available on-campus to students
- The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and is available 24/7 with trained staff to offer emotional support
- Use the Take 5 Toolkit to make the campaign fun and easy
Phi Kappa Psi will be leveraging social media to spark meaningful conversations all week. Follow along using #PhiPsiStory and #Take5.
