Phi Kappa Psi Remembers Dennis “Denny” J. Schwartz

Schwartz

With gratitude for his remarkable life and service, Phi Kappa Psi mourns the loss of Dennis “Denny” J. Schwartz Purdue ’60 who entered Chapter Eternal on August 20, 2025, at the age of 84.

Denny’s loyalty to Phi Kappa Psi began as an undergraduate at Indiana Delta and became a lifelong commitment. He was a driving force behind the chapter’s capital campaign and the construction of a new chapter house, leading the effort with characteristic determination and generosity. His leadership helped create a home that has welcomed generations of Phi Psis and strengthened the bonds of brotherhood at Purdue.

A Respected Trustee and Thoughtful Leader

Denny’s dedication to Phi Psi extended to national service as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. In that role, he was admired for his thoughtful questions, keen observations, and steady guidance. Fellow Trustees recall how Denny consistently elevated conversations—pushing for clarity, weighing long-term impact, and offering perspectives shaped by decades of business and civic leadership.

“Denny was the kind of Trustee every organization hopes to have,” said Ben Nicol, Chief Executive Officer. “He asked the questions that mattered, always with Phi Psi’s best interests in mind. His insights helped us grow stronger and more effective as a Foundation.”

A Life of Service and Leadership

Beyond his contributions to Phi Psi, Denny lived a life defined by leadership and generosity. A proud graduate of Purdue with a degree in engineering, he went on to serve as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Europe. Returning home, he became President of Valley American Bank, guiding the institution for three decades. Under his leadership, the bank flourished, and Denny became known as a trusted executive, mentor, and friend to colleagues.

His influence extended into philanthropy and community service. Denny championed healthcare, education, and local initiatives that improved countless lives. He also gave generously of his time, serving on the board of Memorial Health System in South Bend and leading it as Chairman from 1995 to 1997.

A Legacy of Brotherhood and Joy

Those who knew Denny remember not only his accomplishments but also his spirit. He was quick with a joke, eager to share a story, and deeply committed to his family, friends, and brothers. His warmth and humor made him approachable, and his leadership left an indelible mark on those he served alongside.

His legacy is etched in the Indiana Delta chapter house he helped bring to life, in the stewardship of the Foundation he strengthened as a Trustee, and in the countless lives enriched by his wisdom and generosity.

Marc A. Dumas DePaul ’93, President of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, has declared a thirty-day period of mourning in thanksgiving for the life of Brother Schwartz. All Phi Psi Brothers are encouraged to wear their badge draped with a black ribbon or band during this time of remembrance.

Services for Brother Schwartz will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Indiana, with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may gather at Hahn Funeral Home in Mishawaka on Monday, August 25, to pay their respects.
