VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
MARC DUMAS DEPAUL ’93
After years of dedicated service to Phi Kappa Psi, Marc Dumas DePaul ’93 recently concluded his term as National President, leaving a lasting impact on the Fraternity and its members.
In his Q&A, he reflects on the value of lifelong fraternity membership, the lessons volunteering has taught him, and the profound role Phi Psi has played in shaping his life, leadership, and sense of purpose.
Please tell us about your career or profession.
I’m a real estate broker in Chicago. I work, primarily, in residential real estate helping buyers and sellers with the home needs. I’ve been doing this for the last 13 years.
How has volunteering helped you live your values?
Volunteering has reinforced in me the idea of servant leadership. It reminds me every day that helping people is important. It allows me to watch young men and women grow into the leaders of tomorrow and I might have some small part in that.
Throughout your time volunteering, please share a moment that has reminded you why fraternities matter.
Fraternity matters in so many ways. Especially in a world where people need people. Watching our brothers at Vanderbilt come together for a member of Sigma Chi that they knew that lost his life reminded me that this is bigger than us.
How has your volunteer experience shaped you personally or professionally?
Volunteering always reminds me of an adage my father always said: “Climb as high as you can, and reach back when you climb.” Volunteering has guided my life in every aspect – from how I work to how I raise my children.
What do you hope our members will take from their fraternity experience?
My biggest hope is that fraternity men understand that this is a lifetime experience. Fraternity is advanced friendship. It’s got three defined spots in it, with the new member experience, being an active member of a chapter and then joining the large crowd that is being a good alum. But that last part moves as you move it. It can take you lots of places and help you meet people who want to see you succeed.
Why is it important for you, personally, to stay involved with Phi Kappa Psi as an alumnus?
Phi Psi has given me some of the most important events and people in my life. If not for the fraternity, i don’t have my friend group, my life partner and a purpose. I wish more of our brothers could get involved in some level.
